The River

It seeps out of my heart,
Rushes along my lifelines
Like an unstoppable river.
Determined to crash over the edge
Creating a deep, abysmal pool;
Drowning me, arms flailing.

The force of it crushes me
Dragging me under, lungs straining
For a breath of fresh air.
Squeezing every last breath,
Clawing away at my life
With its ice cold fingers.

My heart screams, beating furiously
To rid itself of this terrible load.
Try as it may, it's much too heavy
For such a tiny form to bear.
Ice creeps in, little by little;
Taking footholds, perhaps forever.

It would take much to break it;
A stronger heart, greater strength
And above all, understanding.
It's a terrible thing, this feeling.
It creates a void, a wide gaping void
That only you, only you, can fill.
